What makes "Forgotten Paris" stand out is Bouvier's unique approach to capturing these underground spaces. Using an analog camera, black and white film, and candles for lighting, he manages to create a dark, mysterious atmosphere that reconnects these places with their past. This approach straddles the line between classic documentary photography and art, creating a unique viewing experience.
The project was realized using a Cambo Wide camera or a Hasselblad camera, with exposure times varying between 1 and 5 minutes. The images were then digitized in high resolution using a Flextight scanner, and basic digital retouching was done using Photoshop. The result is a series of high-definition images that can be printed on any photo media and in superwide format.
While the project started in 2011 and ended in October 2012, Bouvier considers it a lifelong endeavor. With over 155 miles of galleries under Paris and its suburbs, there are many more locations to explore and photograph. Future photographs of Parisian undergrounds will be presented in the form of other stories.
Despite the challenges of accessing these underground spaces, which are prohibited by law and can be dangerous, Bouvier has managed to create a unique body of work that sheds light on a lesser-known aspect of Paris' history. His images can be used for technical, historical, or artistic purposes, and can be exhibited in art galleries or as part of cultural exhibitions related to the history of Paris.
In conclusion, "Forgotten Paris" is a testament to Bouvier's dedication to exploring and documenting the unknown. His work not only provides a unique perspective on Paris' underground quarries, but also serves as a reminder of the city's rich, yet often overlooked, history. As Bouvier continues his exploration, one can only anticipate what other hidden treasures he will uncover.
